1. Children’s Museum of Wilmington
The Children’s Museum of Wilmington isn’t your typical museum, but rather a place full of interactive exhibits that encourage creative play for kids. Kids can climb aboard an imaginary pirate ship in the Ahoy Wilmington exhibit, or dig for buried treasure in the sandbox. The museum also hosts kids’ birthday parties and offers seasonal “camps” for specific interests.
While you’re there, you can take in a stellar view of the wide Cape Fear River from any one of several areas to stop and sit. You’ll also be within walking distance of dozens of quaint shops, restaurants, and other notable downtown landmarks such as the 1914 Murchison Building, the Cotton Exchange, and the USS Battleship North Carolina.
2. Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park
Despite its name, Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park is much more than just a riverwalk water park. The expansive facility also includes a full suite of indoor adventures for families including laser tag, a Kid’s Jungle with a ball pit, mini golf, an arcade, and a rock climbing wall.
The water park is open seasonally early-June to late August, but dry activities are available year-round. With a go-kart course, laser tag, mini golf, jungle gym, and an arcade, everyone will find something to love about this family-friendly attraction.
The Wilmington Riverwalk features stellar views of the Cape Fear River throughout, and there are plenty of benches and built-in stools for visitors to relax. 3. Cape Fear Museum
A project that was decades in the making, the Wilmington Riverwalk is a gorgeous urban walkway popular with locals and visitors. The route passes gorgeous parks, landmarks, and eateries, and runs through the heart of downtown.
In the museum, visitors explore the history, science, and cultures of the Cape Fear region through artifacts, models, vignettes, and hands-on activities. Exhibits delve into the culture and geographic layout of the region, as well as its wildlife ecosystems.
The museum also features special exhibits and tours throughout the year. Tour the USS North Carolina battleship or learn all about basketball superstar Michael Jordan’s hometown in the museum’s Michael Jordan Discovery Gallery. There’s even an in-house art studio and Imagination Circus Exhibition for kids.
4. Edge of Urge
Edge of Urge is more than just a retail store, it’s a community. Founded in 2002 by Jessie Williams, the company is dedicated to supporting independent designers and handmade items. They carry clothing, shoes, and accessories from many different designers. They also support DIY, innovation, and creativity.
For the creative friend who enjoys a good read, the shop has an excellent selection of quirky books that are sure to spark conversation. They also have a wide selection of small-batch cosmetics that are perfect for gifting.
While the majority of their merch is shared between both shops, each location has its own unique flair. For example, the Raleigh store pushes boundaries with provocative slogans on t-shirts and notebooks. They also have celebrity prayer candles and inspirational textiles.
5. Copper Penny
The Wilmington Riverwalk is home to a number of restaurants and bars for visitors to enjoy while on their stroll. Many of these restaurants and bars host events throughout the year, including the city’s most popular event – the annual Riverfest festival in May.
Located in downtown Wilmington, Copper Penny is the city’s official Eagles bar and is a favorite hangout for Philadelphia fans and beer lovers.
