Volunteers
The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (KBSTRRC) is a nonprofit organization that works to protect sea turtles, both living and deceased. Topsail Turtle Project
Topsail Turtle Project is a volunteer-based program that protects sea turtles on Topsail Island. The Topsail Turtle Project is run through the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.
During the summer, volunteers will be walking twenty-six miles off Topsail Island searching for nests. After locating a nest, they will mark the location with orange tape. This will alert beachgoers to leave the nest alone.
The volunteers will then build a ramp from the nest to the water. On release days, the turtles will be brought to the water and released. In the past, the release has attracted hundreds of onlookers.
After the release, volunteers wave goodbye to the turtles. The sea turtles will be rehabilitated in turtle bay and later returned to the ocean. This facility is the only sea turtle hospital in North Carolina.
