Things to See at the Museum of the Bizarre
The Museum of the Bizarre in New York City is an amazing place to spend an afternoon. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a kid or a grownup. From creepy skulls and prison mugshots to an exorcism kit and a unicorn’s horn, you’ll be sure to find something to pique your interest.
Taxidermy display of a two-headed calf
A two-headed calf, or bicephalism, is an infant born with two heads. It lives for ten days after birth. The two heads come out of the neck. The calf has two brains, and it shares control of its organs.
Many taxidermy artifacts of this type are rare and hard to find. But you can see this unusual specimen at a number of museums. For example, the Museum of Marxell in the Northern Black Forest in Germany has one.
Another is the St. Petersburg Museum of History. There is also a stuffed carcass of a two-headed calf on display there.
Some other museum artifacts of this type are found in the Deformed Animals Museum of Llubi in Spain. Other museum artifacts include a two-headed pig, a two-headed sheep, and a two-headed calf. A great place to also visit is.
Unicorn’s horn
The horn of a unicorn is a magical object that has been used for centuries. The horn has been known to purify water and detoxify poisons. It was also used to make scepters and sacred objects.
It is unclear what the origin of the unicorn horn is. Some believe that it is made of enamel, cementum, or dentin. However, it is most likely made of goat keratin.
One possible source for the origin of the horn is the Indus Valley Civilization. This civilization spanned from 3300 B.C. to 1300 B.C. and included modern-day Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India.
Another possible source is the 5th century BC Greek physician and historian Ctesias. He believed that the unicorn lived in India, and told stories about the animal. His descriptions of the animal inspired Aristotle and Claudius Aelianus.
Creepy skulls
There’s a lot to see at the Museum of the Bizarre. You’ll find creepy skulls, animal bones, and even a life-size statue of Michael Myers. And the museum has a nice selection of exhibits, too.
The main draw is the Hyrtl Skull Collection. This is a collection of 139 human skulls collected in the mid-19th century by Viennese anatomist Joseph Hyrtl. He was inspired to collect these skulls after learning that phrenologists believed that the shape of the cranium dictated personality and intelligence.
Another interesting piece is the Pyramid of Skulls. This is a stack of human skulls, which was not usually part of the Post-Impressionism oeuvre.
Exorcism kit
The Exorcism Museum located in downtown New Orleans has some of the strangest artifacts in the world. From a 19th-century German exorcism chair to a sled made of human bones, to the “360-degree” turning head of Regan, the museum has it all.
The museum has even set up a haunted house for Halloween. In 2016, they are planning an outdoor zombie-themed event. This is all thanks to the owner, Justin LaNasa, who also happens to be a born collector of oddities. So, there’s a definite possibility that this collection is just going to get bigger.
During my visit to the museum, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the owner has been collecting oddities for more than twenty years. Not only does he own one of the sexiest scarecrows I’ve ever seen, but he has also got himself quite the oddball collection. Learn more!

You’ve probably seen movies and read books about mirror mazes before. While these attractions aren’t necessarily new, their modern counterparts have gained in popularity. The best part about them is that they’re fun and educational. So the next time you’re looking for something to do in Wilmington, check out a few of these amazing attractions.
The newest of the bunch is the Museum of the Bizarre. This family-friendly attraction is located in downtown Wilmington, NC, and is home to the weird and wonderful. Their exhibits include a Chupacabra hand, a unicorn’s horn, a prison mugshot photo, and even an Alexander Hamilton hair lock.

Mugshots have been used to identify criminals since the earliest times of photography. But their use has evolved. Today, most criminals are identified using fingerprints. And most mugshots are simply tossed.
A mugshot is a photo of a person taken after arrest. The photo usually shows the face with a plain background. This avoids distracting the viewer’s attention from the face. Sometimes, a placard or identifying information is included in the photo.
The use of mugshots to identify criminals dates back to the 18th century. In the late 19th century, Alphonse Bertillon developed a standard method of photographing a person for use in court. He also took physical measurements of his subjects. Next blog post.
